Inside Out

"One thing is what you see on the outside, quite another what we struggle to show" - Sal

How do we give each other a sense of security and closeness when we move outside the heteronormative relationship cosmos, when the usual patterns and labels that we have learnt through society and media no longer apply? And what impact does the constant questioning of the lifestyle of LGBTQIA+ people have on (romantic) relationships?

Based on these questions, the CUMA Kollektiv presents its second full-length physical theatre concert Inside out. Here, the characters from CUMA's last production Vacation from Love and their three-way relationship return: the drag king “Sal” and his two band members love each other. But how does this relationship work in practice?

The concert becomes the place of negotiation of their relationship. The audience witnesses intimate, beautiful and celebratory moments, but also arguments and disputes.  The collective tells this story with its own music and texts, in choreographic interactions with the instruments and each other. The stage design is constructed by the instrumental set up, which is rearranged between scenes to create changing atmospheres and spaces.  The piece does not begin on stage, but in front of the venue on the street or the foyer, and then invites the audience into the theatre for the second scene.

With glitter and show, but no less seriously, Inside Out exposes and dismantles internal and external obstacles to queer life.
